SHUT THE GATES!!! This gas is making me lose friends...

Firstly you might be surprised that sneaking flatulence 10-20 times per day is totally natural and healthy. If you are within this window you can stop reading now and forward this to your friends that are not so lucky. Gas is merely a buildup of fermentation in the large intestines and that gas needs to be released or you will sitting with way more serious issues.

 

Here are some foods to stay away from if your bloating or gas has become an issue:

 

Dairy:
Most people have a reaction towards dairy because of the active protein called casein. It can be noticeable in different ways and one of them being gas and bloating. My favorite substitutes are almond milk and coconut milk. On a side note for you coffee drinkers (myself included), Coffee Bean now has an almond/coconut milk substitute so perhaps a switch away from Starbucks is in order.

 

Protein:
While I myself consume a mostly vegan diet, I do eat meat as I am incredibly active and find that protein helps me to recover properly. However, make sure you are eating organic, grass fed meat and don't consume too much or it will be indigestible and ferment. Also, read the ingredients of your protein powder as this is often the hidden cause of gas and indigestion. I suggest a clean, chemical free plant protein powder. I personally use pea protein which has 36g per scoop with a very high absorption rate.


Wheat:
More and more people are finding an intolerance to gluten. Remove gluten entirely for 30 days and not only could it fix your gas leak, but you will probably notice an increase in energy, inflammation, excess weight and sleep patterns.


Fruits:
Some sugars in fruits promote bacterial fermentation in the intestines and cause gas, including white grapes, raspberries, blackberries, pineapples and strawberries, prunes, pears, peaches, apples and sweet cherries. Fruit starts out as fructose before the liver converts it into dextrose so too much is too much. 1 or 2 pieces of fruit per day is plenty.b2ap3_thumbnail_flatulence_250w.jpg

 

Now that I have rained on your eating parade, here are some natural ways to stop your gas and bloating:


Fennel: 
It’s incredibly effective and also starts working very quickly. You can chew raw fennel seeds or throw a handful into boiling water for 5 minutes and drink as a tea. This usually helps almost immediately.

 

Ginger: 
Ginger helps to stop gas from forming inside the stomach, rather than having to treat gas problems after they arise. Chew on raw ginger root right after a meal or drink a cup of ginger tea. Doing so after each meal could go a long way towards 'shutting the gates'.

 

Apple Cider Vinegar:
One of the many miracles of this God send is stopping the build up of fermentation in the colon. Drink a tablespoon of ACV with a tablespoon of raw honey mixed in 8 oz of water 3 times per day for a few weeks and then you can back down to once per day upon waking up. Cinnamon:
Cinnamon usually offers instant relief from gas problems. Simply warm up a cup of almond milk and add half a teaspoon of cinnamon along with some raw honey. Let it sit for 5 minutes then reheat and slowly drink.b2ap3_thumbnail_fit-n-healthy.png

 

The 'bottom' (pun intended) line is this....we are all individuals so it might take some experimenting to find out which of these remedies works for you. Try each one for a few days until one of them sticks. Good luck re-kindling your friendships :)
