Inflammation And The Pain It Brings!

Could your pain or discomfort be due to inflammation? Absolutely!

Inflammation can be classified as either acute or chronic. Acute inflammation is the initial response of the body, to harmful stimuli like injury or acidity. A cascade of biochemical events trigger the inflammatory response, involving theb2ap3_thumbnail_Knee-pain-3_20131212-192643_1.jpg vascular system or the immune system, and various cells within the injured tissue. Prolonged inflammation, known as chronic inflammation, leads to a progressive shift in the type of cells present at the site of inflammation, and is characterized by simultaneous destruction and healing of the tissue, from the inflammatory process. Ok, now that you understand the differences, you are probably asking yourself the common question;
'Is my pain coming from inflammation?'

It is tricky, because a lot of the time you cannot see the inflammation, as it is at a cellular level and does not create swelling visible to the eye.
Stiffness and inflammation can occur as the result of stress, nerve damage, contracted muscles, subluxations in the vertebrae or discs of the spine.

The amount of inflammation trapped in your body and one of the main ways that it can be controlled, is through nutrition. Certain 'foods' cause a higher inflammatory response than others. The following is a list that you can use as a guideline:

  • The 3 P's –Processed, packaged, or prepared foods.b2ap3_thumbnail_salt_sugar_or-sweetener_20131212-193414_1.jpg
  • Hydrogenated and trans fats
  • Fried foods
  • Sugar (good luck with this one as it is in almost everything) The rule of thumb is to stay away from refined sugar and corn syrup.
  • Synthetic sweeteners
  • Non-organic meat and fish
  • Iodized salt
  • Dairy, this is a big one. Most of us have a dairy intolerance even if it isn't obvious. Today’s dairy products are packed with hormones, antibiotics, and other harmful ingredients so avoid them as much as possible.
  • Wheat. Gluten is becoming public enemy number one, and the effects can take years or decades to show.
  • Alcohol. Who does enjoy and drink after a long day at the office but alcohol is full of sugar and is a real inflammation threat. Stick to wine if you can help it.

Now that i've removed most of the things you love! Sorry! Here is a list of herbs to counter the inflammation response:

  • Turmeric (or the active ingredient – Curcumin)b2ap3_thumbnail_turmeric-spice-with-amazing-health-benefits_20131212-194002_1.jpg
  • Ginger
  • Aloe Vera juice (raw, organic)
  • boswellin
  • arnica
  • devil's claw
  • licorice
  • white willow
  • Bromelain

Stick to 'live' foods by shopping in the perimeter of the store. What I mean here is if it refrigerated, or in the vegetable section, then it is generally a 'live' food. All of the foods in the middle of the store are canned or processed. I took this concept of 'perimeter shopping' from Dr. Roy Vongtama who is a holistic minded oncologist. His theory is simple. Ask yourself after shopping; 'Did I perimeter shop today?' The other question to ask yourself is; 'Did I buy organic wherever possible?'
